Skylights

Los Angeles, USA | with Alisha Coelho

The project develops a transformation logic using finite-state machine system and elasticity-plasticity/shape-shifting design method. Our approach is to create skylight elements that sustains and responds to light resource for optimum efficiency. These elements follow a process between surface, enclosure and circulation based on the resource input. The major motion of the elements are achieved by a combination of actuator motions, light dependent resistors, servo motors connected to Arduino board controlled with computational design software and built with material properties of soft joint - rigid panel structure. These materials are made out of high-tech silicone rubbers, designed and fabricated digitally with engineering design process.
